What is a Hair Gloss?

A hair gloss is a treatment that adds shine to hair.

Hair glosses are usually done by a hair professional at a salon, but you can do a hair gloss treatment at home too.

A hair gloss can be clear or have color in it. Hair glosses are meant to add extra shine to your hair for 4-6 weeks.

Why Use a Hair Gloss Treatment?

Many hair stylists use a hair gloss treatment on their client's hair to make it shiny and silky smooth.

A clear hair gloss treatment is supposed to make your hair shiny.

What You Need to Do a Hair Gloss Treatment at Home

There are a few things that you need to buy for a hair gloss treatment at home. For a start, you definitely need a clear gloss and a processing solution.

1. Redken EQ Crystal Clear Gloss

I recommend buying the Redken EQ Crystal Clear hair gloss from Walmart (you won’t be able to buy a hair gloss from beauty salons unless you are a hairstylist).

2. Redken Processing Solution

You’ll want to get the gloss to gel processing solution from Redken. You can also get the Redken Shades EQ processing solution that has a grey label.

3. Mixing Brush, Dye Brush, and Gloves

After you have purchased these two essential items, I recommend making sure you have an old t-shirt, gloves, a mixing bowl, hair clips, and a dye brush.

Redken Hair Gloss Treatment Instructions

Below are step by step instructions for using a hair gloss treatment at home.

1. Get all of your hair gloss supplies ready (see above) and put on an old t-shirt

Get all of your hair gloss supplies ready (see above) and put on an old t-shirt to protect your clothing from any potential staining or dripping during the process.

2. Mix 1:1 ratio of equal parts EQ Gloss Crystal Clear (000) with Redken Processing Solution

Mix the hair gloss treatment by combining equal parts of EQ Gloss Crystal Clear (000) and Redken Processing Solution in a bowl or applicator bottle. Ensure that the two components are thoroughly mixed to achieve a consistent blend.

3. Apply gloss mixture to dry hair

Apply the gloss mixture to dry hair, starting from the roots and working your way down to the ends. Use a comb or your fingers to evenly distribute the product, ensuring every strand is coated for a uniform result.

4. Leave on hair for 20 minutes

Allow the hair gloss to sit on your hair for a duration of 20 minutes. This time allows the treatment to penetrate the hair cuticles and deliver the desired results.

5. Rinse out hair gloss with lukewarm water

Rinse out the hair gloss with lukewarm water until the water runs clear. Make sure to remove all traces of the product from your hair to avoid any potential residue or buildup.

6. Shampoo and condition hair

Shampoo and condition your hair as you normally would to cleanse and nourish your strands after the treatment. Choose products that are suitable for your hair type and focus on moisturizing and hydrating formulas to maintain the glossy effect.

7. Let hair air-dry (or blow dry with cool air)

After washing, it is recommended to let your hair air-dry to minimize heat damage and maintain the longevity of the gloss. However, if you prefer to blow dry your hair, use the cool air setting to protect your hair from excessive heat.

8. Do not shampoo or wash hair for 24 hours

Refrain from shampooing or washing your hair for the next 24 hours. This allows the hair gloss treatment to fully settle and maximize its benefits, ensuring a longer-lasting shine and color enhancement.

Redken Shades EQ Hair Gloss Review

A hair gloss is supposed to make your hair shiny.

When I used the Redken Crystal Clear gloss on my hair, the hair gloss (surprisingly!) didn’t make my hair shinier.

However, the hair gloss did lighten my hair. Not the results I was expecting…but I suppose that is what happens sometimes.

If you want to make your hair shiny, I recommend using the Olaplex No. 3 conditioning treatment instead.

Post Hair Gloss Treatment

After you've indulged in a fabulous hair gloss treatment, it's crucial to resist the temptation to shampoo or condition your hair for a full 24 hours. This waiting period allows the gloss to fully settle and work its magic on your strands, resulting in a longer-lasting and more vibrant effect.

Additionally, it's best to give your hair a break from any excessive heat styling tools such as hair dryers, curling irons, or straighteners immediately after the treatment. These devices can potentially cause damage to your hair and compromise the beautiful results you've achieved with your gloss. Embrace your natural texture and let your hair air-dry to maintain its newfound shine and health.

Summary:

  • Don’t shampoo or condition your hair for 24 hours.
  • Don’t use a hair dryer, a curling iron, or a straightener. You don’t want to damage your hair.

Alternatives to a Hair Gloss Treatment for Shiny Hair

If you want shiny hair without needing a hair gloss treatment, I recommend 1) using a deep conditioning treatment and 2) taking a biotin supplement for shiny hair.
