If you are thinking of booking your next cruise on the Holland America Nieuw Statendam ship, my advice is simple: go ahead and book it.

My mom and I cruise on Holland America two to three times a year, and we always have a wonderful experience. The staff and customer service are some of the best in the industry, and the newer ships like the Nieuw Statendam are far nicer than the older vessels in the fleet.

Holland America Nieuw Statendam Ship Review

The Nieuw Statendam is one of the newest ships in the Holland America fleet. It is modern, clean, and has updated amenities. I personally give it 8 out of 10 stars. One of my favorite features is the Rolling Stone Rock Room, which adds a lively nightlife option that sets it apart from the older ships.

Nieuw Statendam Wheelchair Accessible Cabin Photos

I recommend always staying in a Verandah room on Holland America ships. It’s nice to have a balcony with a door that opens.

Holland America put us in a wheelchair-accessible room this time around (due to COVID), which means our room was huge!

Dining on the Nieuw Statendam

The dining options on the Nieuw Statendam are excellent.

• Lido Market (Deck 9): Buffet with a wide range of choices for breakfast, lunch, and casual dinners.

• Main Dining Room (Decks 2 and 3): Beautiful two-story dining room with table service for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

• Specialty Dining (extra cost): Options include the Pinnacle Grill (steakhouse), Rudi’s Sel de Mer (seafood), Tamarind and Nami Sushi (Asian), and Canaletto (Italian).

I usually eat at the Lido Market for breakfast and lunch, then enjoy the main dining room at night. Tea time in the dining room is also a fun experience.

The Nieuw Statendam ship (along with the Holland America Rotterdam ship) has a much new and improved gym over the older Holland America ships.

Entertainment on the Nieuw Statendam

The ship offers a wide variety of evening entertainment.

• Rolling Stone Rock Room (Deck 2): My personal favorite. Great live rock and pop music every night.

• B.B. King’s Blues Club (Deck 2): Always a highlight with excellent live jazz and blues bands.

• Billboard Onboard: Dueling pianos and sing-along sessions.

• Lincoln Center Stage: Classical recitals and string quartets.

In addition, you will find comedy shows, guest performers, and productions by the Step One Dance Company. Some comedians are better than others, but overall it is fun to attend.

The Step One Dance Company shows are usually good. If you haven’t seen the shows yet, they are worth going to!

Onboard Comedian

The onboard comedians are a hit or a miss on the Holland America cruise ships.

Most recently we had the comedian Lamont Ferguson. He was funny!!!

One time we had the comedian Keith Bender. He was one of the best comedians we have seen to date!

Pools and Outdoor Areas

The pool on Deck 9 is a central hub with plenty of lounge chairs, dining areas, and a gelato bar. The Dive-In serves free burgers and fries, which are always popular.

There is also an adults-only pool and private cabanas available to rent, although I rarely find them necessary since there are many places to relax around the ship.

The pool area on deck 9 has plenty of lounge chairs and eating areas.

You’ll also find an outdoor bar, a gelato bar, and the Dive-In with free burgers and french fries for lunch.

You can rent out a private cabana if you desire, but you really don’t need them on Holland America. There are enough private areas for relaxation.

The Nieuw Statendam ship has the traditional Holland America live entertainment options (Lincoln Center Stage with piano recitals, B.B. King’s Blues Club with jazz music, and Billboard Onboard with a dueling piano bar) in addition to the new Rolling Stone Rock Room.

My mom and I personally never listen to the orchestra or piano recitals on the Holland America cruise ships, but people to seem to enjoy the music.

B.B. King’s Blues Club is my mom and my go-to for night-time entertainment on the Holland America ships. The band is almost always really good!

If you like listening to music and singing along, you’ll probably like Billboard Onboard.

Holland America Nieuw Statendam – Rolling Stone Rock Room

I personally LOVE the Rolling Stone Rock Room (Deck 2). It’s worth it to choose one of the new Holland America ships (like the Rotterdam or the Nieuw Statendam) to have this entertainment option at night!

I LOVE pickleball. The Sports Court on the Holland America Nieuw Amsterdam ship has pickleball courts and basketball courts, as well as a jogging track. My mom and I also love to play pickleball with each other at night, even if it is windy and the ship is rocking!

Most of the daytime activities on the Nieuw Statendam hosted by The Greenhouse Spa are trying to sell you something, so we often skip them.

How many passengers does the Nieuw Statendam hold?
The ship has a capacity of 2,666 passengers. On one of my cruises in February 2022, only 800 passengers were onboard, which made it feel very spacious.

Is the Nieuw Statendam nice?
Yes. It is modern, clean, and full of updated amenities. It is the second newest ship in the fleet, after the Rotterdam.

What makes it different from older Holland America ships?
The Rolling Stone Rock Room, the improved gym, and the updated dining spaces are big upgrades compared to older ships like the Eurodam and Westerdam.

Is the Holland America Nieuw Statendam ship nice?

Yes! The Holland America Nieuw Statendam is very nice. The Nieuw Statendam is the second newest cruise ship of the Holland America cruise ships (The Rotterdam is the newest ship), so it is modern and updated.
