How to Treat Plantar Fasciitis for Sore Heels

If you have plantar fasciitis and sore heels, here are the top things you can do to get better.

I’ve personally started to get plantar fasciitis over the past two weeks (probably too much running and walking!) and these tips have helped me.

1. Stretch

Make sure to stretch your heels (flex and point your feet) AND your calf muscles.

Check out this video by the Cleveland Clinic to learn how to stretch property.

2. Apply Ice

Apply ice to your heels for 10-15 minutes twice a day.

I personally apply a bag of frozen peas or vegetables to my heel while I put my feet up and call my mom.

3. Rest

Take a break! If you have plantar fasciitis from walking or running too much, then take a break!

4. Replace Your Shoes

If you are a frequent walker or runner, like me, make sure to change your shoes every 1-2 months versus every 3-4 months.

5. Wear Inserts

The cushion that comes with shoes really isn’t that great. I’ve personally started to add inserts to all my running shoes, sneakers, and tennis shoes.

5. Take an Advil

Seriously. An over-the-counter pain medication helps!

6. Wear Socks (and a Splint if Needed) for Plantar Fasciitis

Invest the $15-$20 for socks that add extra support for plantar fasciitis.

You can wear a splint at night to stretch out the heel if needed.

7. Don’t Walk Around Barefoot

I’m guilty of this myself. My condo has concrete floors and I used to walk around barefoot. Don’t do that!

Wear supportive shoes or cute slippers when walking around your house. Walking barefoot is so bad for your sore heels trying to heal!

Everyone seems to LOVE these faux fur slippers on Amazon. They are so cute!

FAQs about Plantar Fasciitis

What are the best sandals for wide feet and plantar fasciitis?

The best sandals for wide feet and plantar fasciitis are the Teva Ankle Strap Sandals. The Teva Ankle Strap Sandals are comfortable and get 5 star reviews by reviewers on Amazon who have plantar fasciitis and plantar fasciitis-prone feet.

Does plantar fasciitis go away?

In my experience – YES! Plantar fasciitis goes away if you take care of your feet.

Plantar fasciitis can go away, but it takes time. It may take up to 6 months, but by switching to more supportive shoes (with insoles) and taking care of your feet, plantar fasciitis can go away. If you are running too much, cutting back and walking instead can help. If you are overweight, losing weight can help to. Making small changes like wearing supportive slippers at home vs. walking around barefoot can speed up the time to heal from plantar fasciitis as well.

There was a period of time when it hurt my feet to walk.

Literally…my feet hurt (and I’m in my early 30s!).

I stopped running for about 6 months, limited myself to walking no more than 7 miles a day (I used to walk a lot), and put Dr. Scholl's inserts into my running shoes. I also stopped walking around my apartment barefoot (I wore cushioned slippers instead) and swapped out my work heels for flats.

After 6 months, my feet are completely back to normal and I can now run again and play tennis…no pain!

Now, I still use Dr. Scholl's inserts for ALL my shoes.
