Breathe In. Breathe Out!

There are many ways to reduce emotional stress: exercise, deep breaths, sleep, time with friends and family, or a nice, hot bath.

But sometimes these go-to tactics may not work.

So what does one do?

If you want to try a new way to reduce stress, give aromatherapy a try to reduce stress.

Recently, I was feeling anxious and needed something extra to feel calm and relaxed at home.

I decided to buy an aromatherapy diffuser from Amazon to relieve stress and I’m glad I did. It made a big difference.

Aromatherapy diffusers are the new, hip trend for adding scent to your home.

Added bonus: aromatherapy diffusers can help reduce stress and positively impact mood and health.

So why not give it a go?

How to Reduce Stress with Aromatherapy

Below are four easy steps to reduce stress with an aromatherapy diffuser at home. Aromatherapy diffusers are a quick and easy way to reduce stress.

Plus, you have so many different scents and aromatherapy diffusers to choose from!

Step 1: Get an aromatherapy diffuser

Finding the best aromatherapy diffuser from Amazon can be overwhelming.

Most aromatherapy diffusers look more or less the same, they all cost about the same ($30), and most have good reviews.

I bought the VicTsing Essential Oil Diffuser from Amazon because I wanted an oil diffuser with a classy, wood-look and multiple light choices.

This cute, pineapple diffuser also caught my eye.

Like the VicTsing aromatherapy diffuser I purchased, this pineapple diffuser changes colors and shuts off automatically when the water runs out.

TJ Maxx also has many aromatherapy diffusers in stores right now (they make great Christmas or birthday gifts!).

Step 2: Buy the essential oils for your aromatherapy diffuser to create a calming environment

There are so many essential oil scents available online, and you honestly can’t go wrong.

I went to my local TJ Maxx and bought two different variety packs to get started.

Don’t have a TJ Maxx near you? During the holiday season, you can buy essential oil scents from TJ Maxx online.

Here are my favorite scents for aromatherapy in the home.

Best Scents for Aromatherapy to Reduce Stress

1. Spearmint

Spearmint is refreshing and great to use in the mornings.

2. Lavender

Lavender is calming and peaceful, and great to use at night when getting ready for bed.

3. Orange

Orange scents remind me of summertime and puts me in a good mood – especially on cloudy, fall days when I’m reminiscing of summer nights.

Step 3: Use the aromatherapy diffuser daily to lower stress

Step three is simple: Use it! I add water to my aromatherapy diffuser daily and have it run for 6 hours a day.

Added bonuses of using an aromatherapy diffuser to reduce stress:

Scent: An aromatherapy diffuser puts out a stronger scent into the air than candles.

Humidifies: It humidifies the air in my condo.

Worry-free: I never have to worry about turning it off when I leave my apartment. No fire concerns!

Different colors: I can choose a different color each day. Switch it up, and have fun!

Step 4: Add water and clean the aromatherapy diffuser as needed

Friendly reminder that you’ll need to add water to your aromatherapy diffuser daily, if not more frequently.

You'll also need to clean your aromatherapy diffuser every once in a while.

To clean, unplug the diffuser, and then wipe it down with water and vinegar. Repeat as needed – to ensure there are no oils stuck inside the diffuser.

More Tips to Reduce Stress

Here are a few more tips on how to reduce stress from experts like the CDC and the Mayo Clinic.

1. Practice Mindfulness and Meditation:

Engage in mindfulness exercises or meditation to focus on the present moment, reduce anxiety, and promote relaxation. Allocate a few minutes daily for deep breathing or guided meditation sessions.

2. Regular Exercise Routine:

Incorporate regular physical activity into your routine. Exercise releases endorphins, which help alleviate stress. Activities like yoga, jogging, or even a simple walk can significantly reduce stress levels.

3. Establish Healthy Sleep Patterns:

Ensure adequate and quality sleep by maintaining a consistent sleep schedule. Create a relaxing bedtime routine, avoid screens before sleep, and create a comfortable sleep environment.

4. Time Management and Prioritization:

Organize your tasks and prioritize them to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Break larger tasks into smaller, manageable steps, and set realistic goals to prevent unnecessary stress.

5. Practice Relaxation Techniques:

Engage in activities that promote relaxation, such as taking a warm bath, listening to calming music, reading a book, or indulging in a hobby. Find what helps you unwind and incorporate it into your routine.

6. Healthy Eating Habits:

Consume a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Avoid excessive caffeine, sugar, and processed foods, as they can contribute to increased stress levels.

7. Social Support and Connection:

Maintain strong social connections with friends, family, or support groups. Sharing concerns or spending time with loved ones can offer emotional support and reduce stress.

8. Set Boundaries and Learn to Say No:

Learn to say no to tasks or commitments that overwhelm you or affect your well-being. Setting boundaries helps manage expectations and reduces unnecessary stress.

9. Mindful Breathing and Relaxation Techniques:

Practice deep breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, or visualization techniques. These can be effective in reducing stress and promoting a sense of calmness.

10. Seek Professional Help if Needed:

If stress becomes overwhelming and begins to interfere significantly with your daily life, consider seeking help from a therapist, counselor, or mental health professional. They can provide guidance and support in managing stress.

Remember, managing stress is an ongoing process, and what works for one person may not work for another. Experiment with different techniques and strategies to discover what best suits your needs and helps you effectively manage stress in your life.

Conclusion

For less than $40, an aromatherapy diffuser with essential oils is an easy, achievable way to reduce stress and add happiness to your life.

Like my daily coffee, in which I choose a different flavor each day (often Verona is my top pick), choosing a different aromatherapy scent each day is an inexpensive way to treat myself and add joy to life.
