Xeomin vs. Botox

A little secret I learned is that EVERYONE gets Botox injections. Okay, maybe not everyone. But a lot of women in their 30s, 40s, and 50s get Botox (and men too!). So I decided to give it a try and got Botox for the first time last year.

But what is better? Botox or Xeomin? Xeomin vs. Botox. Which one is best overall? Which one is cheaper?

A coworker of mine recently confided that she gets Xeomin instead of Botox. I hadn’t heard of Xeomin, so I did my research. I learned that Xeomin and Botox are pretty much the same thing, but that Xeomin is less expensive.

Botox vs. Xeomin – What’s the Difference?

Is Xeomin actually different from Botox? It is, but not by much.

Effectiveness of Xeomin vs. Botox

From my research, I learned that Xeomin and Botox are basically the same. Both help prevent wrinkles and temporarily (for 4-6 months) minimize the appearance of lines around the forehead.

Ingredients Botox vs. Xeomin

To get more technical, the main difference is that Xeomin contains just one ingredient (botulinum toxin A) whereas Botox contains additional additives. Over time, some people develop antibodies to Botox, making it less effective.

Time to See Results for Xeomin

Xeomin also takes about 7 days to “kick in” whereas Botox takes about three days.

Why I Tried Xeomin Instead of Botox – The Top 2 Reasons

I decided to give Xeomin a try over Botox due to two main reasons. 1) It is equally effective and 2) It is cheaper!

Reason #1: Xeomin is Just as Effective as Botox

Studies show that Xeomin is just as effective as Botox. When I went to get Xeomin, I asked the technician, “What’s the difference between Xeomin and Botox. Is one better than the other?”

Is Xeomin or Botox better?

He confirmed what I had learned (the only difference is that Xeomin lacks additives) and responded, “Clinical studies show that both are equally effective. Some of my patients say that Botox is stronger and more effective. Xeomin works better on other patients.”

So check. Xeomin is just as good as Botox.

Then, I asked, “How many people get Botox versus Xeomin?”

Is Xeomin or Botox more popular?

He informed me that if he were to see four patients back to back, three would choose Botox and one would choose Xeomin – primarily due to the brand recognition of Botox.

Reason #2: Xeomin is Cheaper than Botox

The second reason I chose to go with Xeomin is because it’s less expensive! Botox runs between $12 and $15 a unit, whereas Xeomin costs $8-10 a unit.

I went to The AgeLess Center in Atlanta, GA. At The AgeLess Center, Botox is $9 a unit and Xeomin is $8 a unit. If you are getting 35 units, Xeomin saves you $35. That adds up over time!

Best Place to Get Xeomin in Atlanta

You can get Botox injections almost ANYWHERE in Atlanta. Slightly fewer places offer Xeomin. I went with The AgeLess Center because a coworker recommended the place. She is 50+ and has been getting Xeomin for years, so I trusted her advice.

I also chose The AgeLess Center because their health practitioners actually have backgrounds in medicine. The man I saw received his undergraduate degree in biology from The Ohio State and has a physician’s assistant master’s degree.

You don’t need a fancy degree to give Botox or Xeomin injections, but it definitely made me feel better seeing someone who has worked in cosmetic dermatology.

My Experience Getting Xeomin for the 1st Time

My experience getting Xeomin was pretty much the same as my first and second experience getting Botox. The health practitioner had me raise my eyebrows, smile (to show the crow’s feet around my eyes), and make an angry face.

Then, the health practitioner recommended 40 units of Xeomin. I wanted to stay under $280, so we compromised on 35 units.

He then gave me Xeomin injections in my forehead, around my crow’s feet, and between my eyebrows.

FAQs About Xeomin to Look Younger

Below are some frequently asked questions about Xeomin.

How Long Do Xeomin Injections Take?

Xeomin (or Botox) injections are quick. It probably took 3-5 minutes (or less!). The time-consuming part is waiting for your appointment. I went in at the end of the work day and ended up waiting 20 minutes before I saw someone.

Can Xeomin (or Botox) help with raising my eyebrows?

Yes! If one eyebrow is lower than the other, you can use Xeomin to raise one of the eyebrows.

I personally get Xeomin injections to even out my eyebrows. My left eyebrow is slightly lower, so I got Xeomin injections to raise it up a bit.

What Did I Do Differently this Time?

Due to the slightly cheaper price of Xeomin (and due to going to a less expensive skincare center!) I elected to get Xeomin for my crow’s feet too.

How Many Units of Xeomin Should I Get?

Chart showing the average number of units of Xeomin and Botox women get for forehead, between eyebrows, and crow’s feet

I get 31-35 units of Xeomin total. This is actually pretty low, as most women get 5-15 (per side) for crow’s feet, 10-30 on the forehead, and 10-25 between the eyebrows.

The good thing about Xeomin or Botox is that you can always come back to get more units if you’d like.

How Many Units of Xeomin Should I get for Crow's Feet?

I personally get 8 units of Xeomin for crow’s feet. That’s not very much, but it works for me!

Do I Need More Units if I use Xeomin instead of Botox?

No, but Xeomin and Botox are equally effective.

According to my aesthetician, some women have better luck with Xeomin and some women have better luck with Botox.

What’s it like the day after getting Xeomin?

Just like Botox, I didn’t notice or feel anything weird or different the day of, or the day after, getting Xeomin on my forehead. Like Botox, you are not supposed to work out or exercise for 24 hours after treatment. You should also avoid lying down for four hours.

However, I will admit that my left eye felt a bit funny. It didn’t hurt or anything, but it felt a bit funny. I think it’s because this was my first time getting injections for crow’s feet AND because the left eye is where I had the eyebrow lift injections. Fortunately, the feeling went away after 48 hours.

Does Xeomin work?

Yes! Absolutely.

How often should you get Xeomin?

Most people say every 3-4 months.

My botox injector said to get it as soon as this one specific line starts to show up again in my forehead.

So basically go when it starts to wear off!

How long does it take to see results with Xeomin?

Xeomin is supposed to take up to 7 days to see results, but I already notice the difference within two days.

How many units of Xeomin do I need?

Most people get 10-30 units in the forehead, 10-25 for the horizontal lines between the brows, and 5-15 on each side for crow’s feet.

So if you are treating all three areas, you can expect to receive anywhere from 30 to 85 units total.

Personally, I feel like anything above 60 units is a bit much. I get 35 units.

Can Xeomin help with crow’s feet?

Yes! You can get Xeomin to help reduce the appearance of crow’s feet.

How many units of Xeomin do I need for crow's feet?

Most people get 5-15 units on EACH side, so 10-30 units total.

Final Thoughts on Xeomin – My Review

Can I Move My Forehead After Xeomin?

Just like Botox, Xeomin temporarily weakens the muscles, so it’s harder to make an angry face. But do I still have expression in my face and forehead? Absolutely! I can still raise my eyebrows and show expression.

I just can’t make angry faces. Literally – I can’t make those lateral lines appear between my eyebrows right now. Additionally, I don’t see any lines what-so-ever on my forehead when I raise my eyebrows.

What Will I Do Next Time – Xeomin or Botox?

I’ll likely get Xeomin next time around as well.

Assuming I get injections 3-4 times a year, getting Xeomin can save me about $100 a year. That adds up over time!
